(from kathleen harness)

Good Morning,
Could we revisit the decision that blocked the use of the tool "update code from server"? This tool is found in the alt-shift-w world menu and then the help menu then "update code from server". While we were at Squeakfest Brasil I discovered that some of my questions had been answered already but that the version I was using was not up to date and I want it to be.

I think it would be advantageous if updated code is in use by people who are not developers. There have been times in the past when the way I used a feature was unusual so it looked more like a bug and less like a feature. The developers know the limits of the software and tread warily in some places. Children and their teachers are always in Terra incognita and find inexplicable events all the time. What appears to be a feature to a developer may appear to be a bug to an inexperienced user. It might be useful to know when those questions arise sooner rather than later in the process.
Regards,
Kathleen

We do not intend to make "update code from server" work for end-users. You couldn't save the image anyway because it is read-only, saving the image is not as simple as it once was when there was no welcome project anyway, you would miss out on new translations and examples and guides etc. pp.

Instead, our plan is to provide beta versions on the download site.

As Bert wrote, this isn't really even an option in most installations, since we don't have write access to the directory in which the etoys artifact resides. However, users such as Kathleen can, if they prefer, decide to use an etoys-dev version of etoys, which *does* have an active update stream. This is not viable in most school situations but probably is fine in various lab environments such as Kathleen's.

There are a powerfull software company who use all the planet as betatester (they have found how to filter the "user's lamentations" after).
Some teachers say that a lot of students want to work always at expert mode, they always want to have all the posibilities and experiment with them. When they get a crash with expert mode or using "update code from server" they think it is "their fault", so they look for a solution (a new and virgin image...), they have not doubt about Squeak operativeness, they "smell" they are at unexperienced lands. They are demolishers betatester and the first check point about their "experiences" is their teacher.
It's only a comment, I'm not pretty sure about this question. I know sometimes it cause only headache's teacher.
How about include the "update code from server" as a Preference for expert mode?, a child using Squeak IS a lab environment.
